RAISED BY WOLVES GROWING UP POOR IN AMERICA Recollection, Memories, and Other Travesties of My Childhood This is the haunting story of my life growing up poor in Houston in the 1950’s. It is an unforgettable account of extraordinary love, rejection, joy, sorrow, and loss. At times, the story is laugh out loud funny, at others it is heart wrenching in its intensity It is an amazing recounting of unbearable loneliness and solitude of living in abject poverty, of being alive, but not living. It is about the shame and embarrassment of being seen as poor and how I overcame the humiliation of poverty and how I dealt with it. I’m telling this story, not because it needs to be told or that I’m looking for anything out of it. I just want to tell it so someday someone will read it and smile knowing that there is more that binds us together than we like to admit. You’re born and you die, what happens in between is up to us and in the end usually makes for a good story. This is my story of growing up poor in 1950’s Houston. Everything in it is true as I recollect it. Being a storyteller, I embellished a little for entertainment purposes, but I tried to stay true to my experiences as much as possible. I have used place names and individual names where appropriate, other names I changed so as not to embarrass anyone. This is all true to the extent that I can tell the truth. It’s my story, and I’m sticking to it. MP

Raised by Wolves Growing up Poor in 1950 America Mr Mike Pettit 9781542656153 Books Reviews
It was an AWESOME novel written by a top-notch writer who holds your total attention from beginning to end! This writer has much depth to him. Right off you know he's traveled and experienced much throughout his life.. May God bless him with many more successful stories, and I know he will !! I wish him the very best !!
BRAVO! Mike Petitt has written a heartwarming and often heartbreaking story of growing up poor in America. This story will having you laughing until your sides split one moment, and then will have you in tears the next. Written through the eyes of an innocent boy, this story chronicles the adventures and misadventures of life in the projects, then a shack with a leaky roof with his alcoholic father, and next to an orphanage. Through the years, Mike draws conclusions from his life experiences that are hilarious. You'll find yourself traveling down this rocky, unknown road along with the author, while hoping that something miraculous will save him from this life of poverty.
What a great read! Step back to poor urban America. It makes for a drive to succeed or destroys hope. Pettit can weave a tale so well you find yourself there. Follow the adventures of a smart clever street kid as he takes on all the bad times can throw at him.... Humorous, shocking, and uplifting. I found myself turning pages to see if the kid would make it. For a poor country kid this was a window into our poor in the cities. I would NEVER trade places.
I was rooting for young Mikey and hoping he would end up on top. The stories showed me glimpses of America as it used to be, from the poor side of town, and made me wish every child in that orphanage could have been adopted by loving parents. They also showed that joys can be found amid any circumstances, it's not all gloom and sadness. It's about the human spirit, how we react and how we treat each other.
I grew up poor, though not as poor as the author, in the same time period. So I could relate to a lot of what he shared here, from going down to pick up commodity food to shining shoes to make money to wearing worn out hand me downs. While reading this book I chuckled, I laughed out loud, and yes, I wiped a tear or two away. A damn fine book!
I've read several of Mr. Pettit's books and am a big fan already. I started reading this book yesterday and couldn't put it down until I finished. I laughed until I cried on some pages, and had tears of sorrow running down my cheeks in other parts..and sometimes both on the same page. He faced so many challenges at a young age it is hard for me to imagine what he was going through. He took it all in stride and weathered the ups and downs with an eternal optimism. I recommend this book highly. He is a talented man and has had an amazing life, and continues to do so. His description of some of the health films he had to watch will have you on the floor.
Last week I received my copy of "Raised By Wolves" by Mike Pettit in the mail from . I opened it up and entered a world that was ripe with memories and filled with human determination. Mike painted a picture of the struggles he and his family faced and pushed against to survive. So many Americans today have never experienced true poverty or had to struggle just to find a place to get out of the weather to sleep. Mike opens his soul in this book. He shares the heart ache, the pain, the struggles, the humor, the determination, and the courage that he experienced and put forth to survive and succeed in life. There were times that I almost cried reading this and other times that I would laugh out loud at his shenanigans. If you have ever been poor, had family that was poor, ever had to work like a dog just to get something to eat that day, or seen tragedy all around you, you will relate to his story well. if you have never experienced these things you will be amazed at the human spirit Mike displays in the story of his young life. Mike survived his early years by perseverance, determination, courage, resourcefulness, and refusing to accept the opinions of others about how his life would turn out
