The one you really want could be closer than you think....
The One You Really Want is a sweet, funny, romantic novel from best-selling author Jill Mansell. Not to be missed by listeners of Marian Keyes and Cathy Kelly.
It all starts with a shiny, red sit-on lawn mower.
When Nancy spies her Christmas present from her husband sitting on the lawn, she realises the jewellery she thought was for her must be on someone else. Her best friend, Carmen, isn't surprised (she never liked Jonathan) and persuades Nancy to leave Edinburgh and come and stay in her luxury London flat - far too vast for Carmen since her husband, millionaire rock star Spike Todd, died.
Soon Nancy's met gorgeous Connor O'Shea, who lives next door, and his daughter, Mia, is matchmaking - not least because she'd like to see the back of Connor's current pushy girlfriend. Meanwhile Carmen, who's always been certain she doesn't want another man in her life, feels a spark when a handsome charity worker called Joe calls round. But Joe's not quite all he seems....

Carmen and Nancy have been best friends since childhood. Carmen is dealing with her own depression after losing her beloved husband only three years before but when Nancy's marriage takes a bad turn, Carmen is there to help.Nancy moves from her suburban house in Scotland to Carmen's mansion in London to start her life over. With the move comes the shedding of her old life and she realizes it is more than time to move on. Carmen is going through a similar phase in life but has the extra baggage of being extremely rich. Whether she likes it or not, it is an issue and one that she tried to deal with in a variety of amusing ways.
There are a number of men that move in and our of the two women's lives (including Nancy's ex who is completely clueless.) There are memorable characters that fill in the circle that surrounds the women. I especially liked two women: Mia, a teenager who lives next door and who seems to have been born quite mature and Rose, Nancy's elderly mother who is quite surprising (to Nancy at least) quite modern in many of her thoughts and ways.
Jill Mansell's books always give me the feeling of looking in someone's windows and watching a slice of their life. I find her characters and plots believable as well as fun and romantic. I'm always pleased to have opportunity to read one of her novels.
In addition to the copy of the book I purchased on Amazon, I was provided a digital advance reader copy of this book by the publisher via Netgalley.

The One You Really Want (Audible Audio Edition) Jill Mansell Sarah Barron Headline Review Books Reviews
Another cute story from Mansell, this one about a woman who finds her husband's having an affair. Like all strong heroines, she hies herself off to think things over and...
Easy read.
Found this book to be like an interesting lighthearted romantic comedy with multiple storylines and characters we can all relate to.
If you're in the mood for a lighthearted book with both substance and heart, try this one. I've been reading a lot of Jill Mansell's books lately, as an antidote to the world. I enjoy meeting her characters, diving into their stories, and seeing how everything gets to the happy ending. This isn't one of her best, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I enjoy Jill Mansell's novels, I like the English settings, the characters are interesting and fun things happen with a happy ending. But I'm confused as to why says the average time to read this story is 8 hours. I found this to be a very quick evening read.
When Nancy's husband buys her a lawnmower for Christmas, she gets the feeling that he just doesn't appreciate her. Shortly thereafter she finds out that he's been having an affair, and she is almost relieved to be leaving him. She sets up camp with her best friend, Carmen, who has a giant house and no one to share it with after losing her husband. A handsome brother-in-law and adorable Irish neighbor with a meddling teenage girl make this story a fun read with a happy ending for everyone.
My favorite thing about Mansell is that she makes you love all of the characters. While Nancy feels like the focus of the story, you get super invested in Carmen's life and the trials she faces, as well as even Nancy's mom. Every character matters and their lives are so entwined that you grow to care about them all.
I especially loved the character of Mia, the meddling teenager next door. There's something so appealing about a character who does and says all of the things that you are thinking, and she's the one. She is the first to point out the obvious and to take matters into her own hands, and I love that about her.
If you're a Mansell fan or a chick lit fan, this is definitely one for you.
This is a totally enjoyable book. Jill Mansell does such a fabulous job of drawing you into a world of friends that it feels like the characters are real people and you really know them. The dialogue is fun, the plot is amusing and (I'm sure I've said this before in other reviews of her books) the pacing is such that you never get tired of any of the characters. Most importantly for me, the great Mansell humor was very much in evidence and made it such a nice experience. I was sorry to get to the last page of this book and to leave these friends behind.
I have loved other Jill Mansell books. Not this one. What a hot mess. I have no idea why I kept reading. It's awful. I won't tell the plot -- which barely exists. I couldn't even enjoy the predictable characters. It's like junior high erupted. Bed hopping, relationship hopping, outing someone who clearly didn't want to be outed, and out of the clear blue sky, with no context, a character "protests" by getting naked in Trafalgar Square. Seriously? It wasn't even funny. And what is up with all the smoking? The owner of a gym -- smoking? at the gym? Please. Anyway -- don't squander your money. I couldn't even throw it against a wall, burn it, or shred it (darn you, ). And I would have... in the old days.
